Education. It’s fundamental to where we’re going as a society. Since 2012, we’ve been working with UBC to discuss stories about philanthropic donations and alumni talents. Our objective? To attract the gifts that allow the university to thrive and propel both the local and global community forward.

Growing stronger as a community

The University of British Columbia is one of Canada’s most respected universities. In 2012, our Vancouver-based copywriters teamed up with UBC for what was then the most ambitious fundraising campaign ever undertaken by a Canadian university.

Two Messages to Convey

Start an Evolution invited donors and alumni to connect more deeply with the university. The goal was to raise a whopping $1.5 billion and increase alumni engagement by the end of 2015. To promote the good work at UBC, we created two kinds of stories. The first about donors who wanted to support various causes through the university; and the other about students who could share the powerful impact of these gifts.

A Successful Ending

The campaign was a huge success and ended up bringing in a whopping $1.624 billion in three years. The funds would help support essential student scholarships, transform learning spaces, and fund life-saving research at UBC.

Since then, our Vancouver copywriters have teamed up with the alumni engagement office to create content for two pivotal fundraising newsletters: Scholarly Pursuits and Estate Planning Review. It’s been our privilege to meet and interview all kinds of academics, researchers, and luminaries at UBC. Through copywriting, we have successfully shared information about different ways of giving, and showed the wide-reaching impact that donor gifts have on students, teaching, and research at UBC.

Art of the appeal

It takes a lot to get people to open their hearts (and wallets). It’s not enough to appeal to the head or the heart—great copywriting has to do both. To create compelling articles, we interviewed each candidate to capture stories in their own unique words. Many donors talked about historic ties or explained how the UBC made it easier to advance worthy causes. For students and researchers, stories primarily focused on how scholarships and support lead to triumphant breakthroughs that created positive ripples locally and globally. As a team of Vancouver copywriters, we took these interviews and spun them into articles that showed how supporting UBC was part of a greater movement. As a final touch, we added powerful calls to action that whisked readers away to succinct donation pages where they could make a gift or learn more about supporting the university.
